Employees of the iPhone maker were initially scheduled to return to the site in early September. The new rise in Covid-19 cases and the higher transmissibility of the Delta variant are pushing the apple company to review its plans. Employees will therefore telework until the beginning of October at least.
Back to school shifted at Apple. The employees of the company at the apple will not return to the office before the beginning of October. Their return was originally scheduled for September, but the persistence of the Covid-19 epidemic and the rapid spread of the Delta variant is a game-changer.
The iPhone maker is thus becoming one of the first American tech giants to delay its plans for a return to normal. According to several internal sources, employees will be notified at least a month in advance before having to return to the site.
One in two Americans vaccinated
The availability of vaccines and the drop in the infection rate, however, foreshadowed a more rapid return to “life before”. In June, Tim Cook had asked his employees to return, three days a week to the office, at the beginning of September.
However, even with half of the inhabitants in the United States are now vaccinated, the Covid-19 continues its progression. After ten weeks of global decline in coronavirus deaths, the Delta variant, which is more transmissible than the original strain of the virus, is leading to a further increase in cases around the world.
And the United States is not spared. Daily cases have doubled in a month and hospitalizations are on the rise again.
Online shopping boom
In the tech industry, teleworking has spread widely during the pandemic. Several Silicon Valley companies are no longer considering a full face-to-face return. Facebook said it would dramatically increase the number of employees who can work remotely , even after the pandemic. For its part, Google recently introduced a more permissive return to work policy that gives staff the choice of working from different locations or entirely from home.
For the rest of its employees, Apple would work on a hybrid arrangement. The employees of certain stores could thus work from home. The apple firm believes consumers may continue to prefer online shopping even if the pandemic abates.
