The Korean regulator has fined $ 6.1 million with Facebook and requested a criminal investigation against Facebook for sharing user personal information.
The Korea Personal Information Protection Committee (PIPC) said that from May 2012 to June 2018, the agency discovered that Facebook provided personal information of at least 3.3 million water users. This is for other companies without consent.
The PIPC representative said that when users log into other company’s services with their Facebook accounts, their friends’ information is also shared with these companies illegally. The new committee, established in August, announced it would send the information of Facebook Ireland – the unit in charge of Facebook’s operations in Korea – to the prosecutors for criminal investigation.
Regarding the incident, a Facebook representative in Seoul said “the company is working hard to cooperate and regretted that the PIPC is promoting a criminal investigation”.
